CHAPTER 19

Jax locked the car and followed Steph Doughty to the common entrance to the block of flats, passing three kids taking it in turns to kick a football against the wall. They knew better than to stare.

They exited the lift on the top floor, where the stink of piss and bleach hit Jax full-force. The white paint was peeling and colourful graffiti tags covered most of the walls. Overhead, the strip lights had been broken and never replaced. Amidst the strewn crisp packets and cigarette butts, were discarded syringes, tiny balls of tin-foil and a couple of used condoms.

Steph let them in and Jax headed straight for the living room. On the settee, Steph’s younger sister, Sharelle, was painting her toenails and watching a game-show on TV.

“Where’s Dream?” Steph asked, laying her keys on the TV cabinet.

“In the bedroom,” Sharelle said without looking up. “I put her down about half an hour ago.”

Although the building was a shithole in an area only a couple of steps removed from a slum, the flat was at least warmly-decorated if without much flair. Most of the cheap furniture was new and those older pieces were in good repair.

Jax crossed to where Sharelle sat, blowing on her toes. “Move your leg,” he said, tapping her knee before dropping into the seat.

She threw her leg up before he crushed it against the cushion. “Charming,” she said.

Steph shucked out of her leather jacket and threw it over the back of the settee. “You staying for summut to eat, Relle?”

“Nah,” she said, getting to her feet and casting a look at Jax. “I think I lost my appetite.”

Jax gave her a sweet smile and his middle finger. She scoffed and headed for the door, slipping into her shoes and jacket.

When they were alone, Steph went into the bedroom to change and check on the baby. When she came back, she was barefoot in jean shorts with more rips than fabric and a black Lycra work-out top. “Sleeping like a log,” she announced.

“You got enough milk and stuff?” Jax asked.

“Yeah, ta.”

Jax was pretty sure that Dream wasn’t his – the kid was blonde, for one thing, although Jax’s mother was a white woman with blonde hair – but regardless, he tried to look after Steph. A lot of the guys did the same, some out of loyalty and others because they were also unsure whether or not they had fathered the baby.

Steph was twenty-one, with dirty-blonde hair in a perpetual ponytail. When they fucked, Jax was pretty good about making sure to use a condom, since she wasn’t the discerning type and he didn’t want his dick turning green.

On the other hand, there had that time when he and four of the older lads – X-Ray among them – had all gone at her right here in the living room. Steph was okay about that kind of thing. She didn’t even mind if you came on her face, which they all did, apart from Robbo, who was too drunk.
